FUTURA is the first bookcase made of Stonethica recycled marble. A circular design project that is one of the most interesting exhibits we have seen at Marmomac 2019.
Marmomac 2019: Naturality
The 54th edition of Marmomac, the leading global event for the natural stone industry, has just ended in Verona, Italy. An incredible showcase of the finest marbles, technologies and design projects, highlighting excellence in the Italian natural stone sector. This year theme“Naturality” aimed at enhancing the most authentic aspect, the purity, and geodiversity of the stone material.
Stonethica has been one of the companies that best represented and interpreted this theme, with an extraordinary example of circular economy featured in the Italian Stone Theather (the Marmomac pavilion dedicated to design). Stonethica has presented Futura, a marble bookcase designed by Giorgio Gaudio, and INOUT23 an incredible marble table with marble chair designed by Paola Navone / Gervasoni.
FUTURA, the Stonethica marble bookcase by Giorgio Gaudio: minimal, modular and sustainable
FUTURA is a bookcase designed by Giorgio Gaudio entirely made of Stonethica Calacatta and walnut wood. Its modular interlocking structure allows you to assemble it in different ways. The secret of its light weight is the OSB inner core.
FUTURA is modular and can be completely customized: by decomposing and reconstructing the structure, you can find marble bookends integrated into marble. This allows the structure to acquire functionality when deconstructed. FUTURA bookcase is designed to reach different heights and dimensions, freeing creativity and possibility to play with materials and different compositions. The strongly minimal concept was born with the intention to enhance the content, before the furniture itself.
It is not the first marble bookcase we have seen, and the modularity reminds something tried by Archea Associati with “Marmeria” or by Paolo Ulian with “Numerica”, but it is the first in recycled marble. FUTURA is solid and light at the same time, not too extravagant, but simply elegant and original. Nothing is wasted and every detail has been carefully studied to maximize functionality.

Stonethica: from waste to wow
Stonethica is a new natural material, made of recycled marble (from 98.6% to 99.4% of recycled material). Stonethica, an innovative company based in Pietrasanta (Apuan – Versilia marble district), reuses precious marble that is considered waste in other industrial processes, recreating beautiful slabs with a special non-toxic resin. The result of this ecological production cycle is a homogeneous material with a very interesting layered texture, combining stripes of different colors and materials.
Stonethica slabs feature a really interesting contrast between the geometric composition and the random texture of marble. Not only Stonethica slabs are sustainable, but they are also beautiful and extremely smooth to the touch. Besides being used for floors, kitchen tops, or bathroom surfaces, Stonethica is so versatile that can be used to create unique design pieces or even sculptures.
The company is really serious about sustainability, starting from their business cards: if you do not want to keep them, just plant them, they contain seeds! Stonethica.com
