Originally trained as a goldsmith, London-based Kia Utzon-Frank (KUF studios) now crafts cakes that look like marble sculptures. Her creations will blow your mind: first, the marble KUF cakes launched in 2016 and showcased at the Milan Design Week, then the marble Flodebollers and the BRIK chocolate tiles, Kia’s latest brainchild.
BRIK: the award-winning chocolate terrazzo tiles
Brik is a chocolate bar looking just like a Terrazzo tile, designed by KUFstudios, winner of the Wallpaper* design award 2019. The flavours are developed in collaboration with Harrods’ head pastry chef Alistair Birt: these chocolate terrazzo tiles must are as spectacular to taste as they are to look at.
Each tile is handcrafted with the finest chocolate, infused with carefully selected herbs and spices and coloured using only natural colours such as spirulina and activated charcoal, both well known for their detoxifying properties.
Marble Terrazzo is a hot trend right now: not only used for tiles and furniture, but as well as a pattern to be printed anywhere, and with this project, KUF studios introduce terrazzo food. During Milan Design Week 2019, KUF studios collaborated with Mascherpa Tiramisu, creating a Terrazzo chocolate Tiramisu!

KUFcakes: the incredible marble-like cakes
KUFcakes are bespoke luxury cakes. Using a marzipan printer it is possible to print patterns onto marzipan and fondant and cover the cakes to make edible sculptures. These cakes just look like granite, other like green marble, black marble, and even Carrara marble. Marble wedding cakes and marble sugar cookies are a major trend but you have never seen anything like this before, KUFcakes are truly pieces of art.
KUFpuff: marble like flødebollers
Kuf studios has reinterpreted the Flødeboller, a Danish classic treat. A Flødeboller is made of a soft Italian meringue on a marzipan base covered in chocolate. KUFpuffs imitate stone and concrete surfaces, using only natural gluten-free ingredients and colourings.
KUF Studios: a multi disciplinary design brand
KUF studios is a multidisciplinary design brand founded by designer Kia Utzon-Frank to contain her versatile practice. KUF studios include 6 KUF categories: KUFjewellery, KUFtwist, KUFcakes, KUFstring, KUFstuff, and KUFidea. Every time she gets a new idea a new category is added to the list.
“My fields of interest have always been broad and varied, and I feel a compulsion to explore and learn as much as possible. I like to venture into different disciplines, genres and skill sets, and to combine aesthetics and functionality, transformation and multi-functionality.” Explains Kia Utzon Frank.
She makes a model a day and experimenting with different materials and methods. This way she invented the patent-pending Louver Twisting Comb (KUFtwist), created big foldable string structures (KUFstring), designed an adjustable plant hanger and other interior design objects (KUFstuff), made gradient and modular jewellery (KUFjewellery) and came up with a concept for bespoke luxury cakes for events (KUFcakes).
