Today is the day, the Milan Design week 2019 is finally starting! In case you are wondering if marble is still a thing, we have taken a look to Salone del Mobile and Fuori Salone and marble is still everywhere. Marble has been the protagonist of design weeks around the world for the past 5 years, with an increase of marble utilization in interior design, that has gone far beyond counter tops and bathrooms. After the industrial wave, enhancing concrete and weathering steel, designers have gone back the origins using natural materials.
At MDW 2019, Marble is the protagonist of projects that mix traditional craftsmanship and technology, projects enhancing conviviality and sharing, as well as sustainable and circular design projects.
Salone del Mobile 2019 (9th-14th April 2019) is the most prestigious international event for the sector, a global platform for top-notch products with an emphasis on innovation with more than 370,000 attendees from 188 different nations. The Salone and the ‘Fuori salone’ side events and installations all around Milan, constitute the Milan Design week, a project of extraordinary value, able to mix design, technology, and history.
Among all the marble related projects at MDW 2019, we recommend you do not miss these three MADE in CARRARA projects:
1. The Debut of Franchi Umberto Marmi: MARBLE COMFORT
It’s the first time at the Salone del mobile for Franchi Umberto Marmi from Carrara, one of the top players of the stone sector, presenting a home design collection developed in collaboration with Designer Eugenio Biselli from Interni Now. It is a significant entry in the world of design with a catalog of interior and exterior furnishing made with prestigious marbles from Carrara.
The new HOME DESIGN collection feature marble structures in contemporary silhouettes that could work perfectly for interior situations. Sofas, armchairs, and chaise lounges that embrace the beauty of marble through clean lines and harmonious shapes ensuring bold looks and utmost comfort.
“It’s a collection enhancing the noble and powerful essence of marble interpreted through the contemporary language of design and housing trends. A live and warm marble with a great visual impact is combined with other materials:teak wood, cosy cushions, and metal in a true synergy” explains designer Eugenio Biselli. Umberto Franchi collection represents natural stone as an element of comfort, conviviality and sharing, and the installation in Milan evokes warm and welcoming atmospheres.

2. PARLA! Human Spaces installation by Studio MK27 and Filippo Bricolo for Furrer: MARBLE CONVIVIALITY
PARLA! (TALK!) is not just a marble table but an installation enhancing the value of conviviality: an exhortation to share food and thoughts. Designed by Marcio Kogan (Studio MK27) and Filippo Bricolo, the 12-meter long table is made of fine ‘Statuarietto’ marble extracted in Carrara quarries by Furrer, and it is wisely lit with a tailor-made lighting system by Buzzi & Buzzi.
From Brazil to Italy, two designers present an installation table that wants to be a call for those who still want to dream but can no longer find the space.
The marble top has a single central support for maximum comfort of the diners, guaranteeing at the same time the right solidity. Furrer, celebrating eighty years of activity this year, was involved from the choice of the most suitable material, the excavation, the transformation of the marble block and processing, up to the final assembly. The Installation creates a very pleasant space involving another company from Carrara ‘I Profumi del Marmo’.
“HUMAN SPACES”, a highly anticipated Fuori Salone exhibition-event was conceived by the monthly magazine INTERNI in the courtyards of the University of Milan and other locations.
Starting from the assumption that life is more important than architecture, international designers and architects have been asked to translate the concept of ‘human space’ into experimental site-specific installations, from furnishings to urban mobility, and circular economy production systems.

3. Niccolò Garbati presents la Sensibile: MARBLE & TECHNOLOGY
Niccolò Garbati presents, within Ventura Future, three projects designed and produced in Carrara: La Sensibile, the Wireless Charging Pad, and Interactris. Three connected objects, one evolution of the other, that share the union of innovation and tradition, technology and craftsmanship, style and functionality, home automation and design.
La Sensibile is a wireless recharge lamp made of a marble base (white Carrara or grigio bardiglio), a steel stem and a light bulb. The induction generated by the contact with the base is transferred via the metal stem to the bulb, turning it on. The Sensitive is a complement and the evolution of the Wireless Charging Pad.
The universal Wireless Charging Pad is carved by hand recovering marble waste. The technology behind the Wireless Charging Pad is designed to be applied to furnishings and surfaces in stone or marble, both in private homes and public spaces, think about a restaurants table or a public bench.
Interactris, is an interactive game based on the classic “tic-tac-toe”. The game plan and the OXO pieces are made of white Carrara marble and black Marquina marble, obtained from stone processing waste. When the pieces are placed on the playing surface, a light turns on.
Niccolò Garbati was born in Carrara in 1990. Last year, he was selected by Adi among the 20 best designers under 35 who participated in the Milan Design Week 2018.
